Caleb's dreaming of a White Christmas?

All day yesterday it snowed on and off. We had a few inches and the kids were thrilled! Last night it was Caleb's turn to say prayers. He thanked Heavenly Father for the snow, and then asked if He would please send us more.

When we had Caleb look out the window today he gasped "I guess I prayed a little too hard!"

Bwahahahaha!!
We woke up this morning to a heavy blanket of fresh snow! Jes had to borrow the neighbors snow blower because it was so labor intensive! :)

Two day total!

And then... this is just what was new overnight!
Fun to shovel off a driveway huh??
Jestin's poor truck is going no where fast! LOL His tires are terrible so he is stuck in the snow at home :)
Cub was SOOO pleased to get out in it... we had to send him back in to get pants on! He came out to get busy in it in his PJ's! (tee hee)
Cam suited up and was on a mission!
Cody was a good sport and helped his Dad do driveways and sidewalks throughout the neighborhood.
Cam's plan was the biggest pile they could make... and then turn it into a fort!
Dad and Cody had a blast throwing snow at him! LOL

 Catch that Cam!
 Hey! Good catch!! :)
Caleb and Cam packing it down. The kids spent almost the entire day outside. They came in after dark and had to be run through the bath to get warm. It was a perfect snow day! Even Caleb's last day of school before Christmas break was cancelled because of the snow... but he got so much pleasure from playing with his siblings in the snow he didn't even mind.
It snowed almost all day. This was our table in the back yard.
I love how it was coming down... and how it covered Jes' truck.
We had to dig out the chickens too! LOL

And it's suppose to snow all day tomorrow into Thursday...

I think we are going to have a White Christmas this year!
*GRIN*

Ewell's "Christmas Eve" Party

Every year we have a party for "Christmas Eve" with the Ewells. Usually it is the Sunday before Christmas, and this year was no exception. We all look forward to the great company and great pot-luck meal. This year again... was no exception. :)
It took me a little while to get down the stairs to the basement family room, but once I got there, they settled me into a comfy chair and party we did!

It was nice to visit with Jes' immediate family. We haven't seen any of them since before my stroke, except for Jes' mom who has come down and helped with laundry a couple of times. We sure have missed them all!

Jes' sister Katie & her hubby Greg

Jes' brother Tyler and girlfriend Melissa

Papa & Gram (Jes' Dad and Mom)
After all the yummy food... it was time for the traditional visit from Santa Clause! He always brings new Jammies to all the kids! We were excited to hear what the kids wanted for Christmas, since they had kept their lists mostly secret, knowing that Christmas was going to be a little different this year...

Whisper what you'll bring to me... tell me if you can!
Cody with Santa
He wouldn't tell Santa what he wanted for Christmas. He said that there wasn't anything he "needed". He was happy with what he has. (Earlier discussions about Christmas wishes revealed that he was just happy that his mom was ok... nothing anyone could buy him could make him happier. :*-) He is such a great kid!)
Aunt Millie with Santa

Baby Jaysen was NOT pleased! LOL

But Santa was ok enough to give knuckles to! Tee hee hee!

Hmmm... was Caleb a good boy??

He was happy to get a present from Santa!

Camer's and Santa
Cameron had many of us in tears. He told Santa he wanted his Daddy to get a good job for Christmas!
(I am telling ya! I have great kids!!!)
Ty's cute girlfriend Melissa's turn!

We teased that all she wants for Christmas is a ring... and we don't mean on the phone! ;)
She is just awesome and we hope that she will become part of our family soon.

Santa and Mrs. Clause
Isn't this the cutest picture ever??

Caleb in his new PJ'S with his new toy too!

Ninja Emma
Her new jammies are so cute and pink with kitties! :)
Where's the snow??

So... after the chaos of everyone opening their gifts at once, and getting changed into their warm new PJ's, I turned to Caleb and said, "Hey! I didn't hear you tell Santa what YOU wanted for Christmas"
He replied that "he didn't ask, so I didn't tell him."
I said to go quick and tell him now before he leaves!
He quickly replied, matter-of-factly, that he didn't think it was the real Santa anyway because it sounds like Grandpa. I laughed and said, "Oh really?"
To which he added: "Besides, he doesn't gots snow on his boots. The real Santa gots snow on his boots!"

How can you argue with that?? Bwahahaha!!
So... we are left wondering still what our kids really want for Christmas this year, and hope between what little we guessed and got them, and what a sweet Secret Santa stopped by and left (a few early presents that are making Caleb crazy LOL), that this Christmas will be magical for them.

Though... with the miracles of healing they have witnessed with the recovery from their mom's stroke... I don't know if store bought gifts can even measure up.
Heaven Father gives the most amazing gifts.
We are humbled at our Christmas miracle this year...
And we are so thankful for His greatest gift... his Son Jesus Christ.
Merry Christmas to one and all!!

Leaps and Bounds...and a step or two back

This day has been H.A.R.D. It has been a crazy weekend, and I think I am paying the piper.

We had the concert on friday, getting home just before 2 am. We put together our casserole for the Ward Christmas Party Breakfast and went to bed. We had to get up and make 2 - 5 quart thermos' of orange juice (supplied by the Elder's Quorum - so that means us. LOL) and bake our casserole, and have it all ready by 10 am. It was a fun breakfast/nativity and we were glad we went.

Then on Saturday, following the party, the kids and I worked together to get all the household chores done. I am so blessed. The kids did really well cleaning their respective chore rooms. :) With few complaints. Then Jes and I ran a couple of errands that couldn't wait. By the time we arrived at home, it was time to hurry and eat dinner so we could get to the family wedding. (Jes' cousin Grady) I could not do it. I was so done you could have stuck a fork in me! LOL Jes took the kids and drove over to the wedding. He drove into the parking lot as the bride and groom drove out. I felt so bad! (if I hadn't been so slow moving at our errand stops he would have made it! :P)  I fell asleep before the garage door even went down, and slept so hard I could barely move. I woke up a few times later that evening, but mostly was sleep walking really. I remember getting off the couch and going to bed, but not really at the same time! LOL

Sunday I slept until almost noon. We got ready and I went to sacrament meeting with my family. The meeting was amazing!! I felt the Spirit so strongly. I had to keep my eyes closed through most of it because I felt so overstimulated, but I think that helped me to feel the Spirit even more. Jes brought me home after the meeting, and as he headed back to church, my cousin Nikki & her hubby & son stopped by for a visit.

Isnt he the cutest little mite ever?? :)
They stayed until the family came home... and we had a great visit. We made something to eat and I immediately fell asleep. Jes went hometeaching, and when he returned, we loaded up. We had a family party at Ewell's. (See following post for pictures and details)

It was a fun time, and I was blessed to be able to keep my mind happy and social. It was crazy busy, loud and stimulating. LOL A regular family party! *GRIN*

On the way home, I had to ask everyone to not talk, and no music. My head was pounding. My senses were being awful. I just wanted to get into bed and close my eyes and quit moving my body.

My head hurt all night long. I could not sleep well... and 5-6 times in the night I had a strange thing happen. My right side only would jump, go rigid, and felt like all my nerve endings were zinging. It only lasted 3-5 seconds, but would fully wake me up. Feeling my right side has been the goal... LOL... but really. That was annoying.

And now... here it is Monday. I woke up with great movement and strength... that only lasted for a few hours. I could almost walk without a limp. For a few hours. Then I was done. I have slept and felt completely exhausted for the remainder of the day. My muscles are not as quick to respond. My speech keeps catching. It has felt like I have lost a few days of improvement. I hope that in the morning it is better again.

xxcrossing fingersxx

I would not trade the experiences I have had this weekend... but I think I still need to document where I am at in honesty. It helps me to see how far I have come and where I am going. And the things I have enjoyed have been worth it! :)

Check 1 off the "Bucket List"

We are getting really good at "flying by the seat of our pants"! LOL

One of my dearest friends, and FLYSistah, Allie, called to check on my progress on thursday evening. I was doing really good and so she extended the most awesomest invitation!!

She and her hubby Mike had been selected from the lottery for The Mormon Tabernacle Choirs Christmas Program featuring David Archuletta. They had 4 tickets total and invited Jes and I to join them. I was so torn!! It had only been 2 weeks since my stroke, and I was not sure what to expect from my body. Also, my mind has been stuggling with processing information, I feel over stimulated and almost like I have A.D.D., as I can't seem to tune out everything going on around me. A concert seemed like a recipe for disaster.

BUT... this is something I have dreamed about!! I have wanted to hear the Choir since forever. I live in UTAH! For heaven sakes and I have never seen them in person! I have been to the Conference Center for multiple conferences, but it has never been them singing at the sessions I have attended. I *REALLY* wanted to go!

I said as much to Ma, and before I knew it, she and Dad were working it out to get me a wheelchair, and Jes was supportive of going. So we got the kids settled and off we went!
Allie and Mike arrived 2 hours early to get in line, as the tickets don't guarantee you a seat. You still have to wait in line and hope you get in. We did. This is us waiting outside for about 35 minutes. It was 33 degrees. But the company was great and we had some good laughs waiting in line. :)
Allie and I after the concert.

It was a great concert!!! My mind did SOOO much better than I thought it might. And it was nice to hang out with someone who HAS A.D.D.... *giggle* we were two peas in a pod!
Jes' favorite part was when Michael York narrated the story of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and then later the Nativity story. The choir and orchestra were PHENOMIAL!! So were the dancers and the Bells Choir. David did well... he has a nice voice. It was magical!
The set was incredible too! I didn't know unttil the next day, but another of our FLYSistahs (Patty whom I went to NY with)'s husband was the set designer! He just an amazing job!! I loved it!
We didn't get out of the concert until almost 10 pm, but I wish we had walked across the street and taken photos on Temple Square. We probably would have, but we hadn't eaten dinner and we were all starvin'!
This little house is across the street from the Conference Center. It looks like a post card house! I had to have a photo of it! :)

We were given the gift of some $, so we splurged and went out to eat for our Christmas date and hung out until almost midnight. It was SOOO fun! And so nice to get out of the house, and focus on something besides therapy and day to day living made harder. I could not have asked for a better Christmas gift. Thanks Ma and Dad for making it happen... and...
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Allie and Mike!! We can't wait to hang out again! It was SO much fun!!!
I love you Allie!!

Progess update & Dr. visit

Thursday and Friday were my best days. I took on so much more of my ability to move my body without a lot of thought process. I was able to attend the Relief Society Christmas Party on Thursday night (Thank you Shannon for remembering me and being my shuttle! and Becki for being my cutest waitress ever *grin*) It was so nice to attend and feel the Spirit of the program. It filled my soul in so many ways. I was glad I didn't miss it. (and the Sisters were SO nice to wait at the bottom of the stairs and watch me gimp up them with my cane *ugh* That was nice and EMBARRASSING! LOL)

Friday we went to the Dr. for my follow up. I told him I had opted out of the blood thinners. I had spent a better part of the week in between praying and trying to get comfortable with being on Cumaden for long term. I couldn't. It just isn't the right step... and I know it in my heart. He was hesitant at first, but as we discussed things he was supportive in my decision. Since we aren't sure what caused this stroke 100% in the first place, we were using the blood thinners as a "just in case", when there wasn't strong enough evidence to support it. I am still taking the cholesterol med, though my #'s aren't THAT elevated and my veins look good as far as that, and I am also on both my heart meds and a new histamine blocker. I have opted to start a more organic approach. I am taking ginger, Omega 3 fish oils and a vitamin D3 supplement on top of my regular vitamins. I have more research to do... but feel really pleased with my paths I am being led down and have this deep feeling of being led by the Spirit to know what my body needs.

The Dr. also tested my kidneys again and they came back looking good. I still have some bowel problems (can't feel the sensation and so don't go) so Jenny gave us some grapefruit oils to try and showed us how to massage my tummy. I also have tried some Miralax. It is starting to work, just waiting on better sensations to feel down there. It will come I think... with time.

He wants to see me after Christmas again. He is concerned now that I have gone off the steroid that we may see a decline in improvements, or some recurrence of symptoms... so he is monitoring me closely. He is feeling more and more that it may be an autoimmune disorder. He said they are hard to diagnose and the symptoms are varied. But I have so many of them...that it just seems to fit. We shall see.

The best part about my Dr. visit, was seeing the awe in his eyes at the leaps and bounds improvements I have experienced. He was thrilled!! It was neat. It makes me so happy to see the reward of my efforts...and be reminded of just how far I really have come! :)

We are really hopeful for a full recovery at this pace by New Years! :)

Today I can write!!!

I can write today!!! If I use a big fat pen, I can write!! It looks slightly like a first grader... but hey! *GRIN*

It was a long night. I was exhausted and slept hard! All night I had massive nightmares and woke up one point with my heart racing and pounding, and irregular enough that I thought I was in A-fib. I don't know if it is related to the brain work I am doing or what... but it was a LONNNG night.

I also am finding myself wondering if I now know how those with ADD feel. My ability to tune things out is almost non-existent. I am hyper focusing on all my senses and everything going on all at once. I have to just shut my eyes and try to listen to my own breathing. It is very bizzare. More later...

Physical Therapy - Day 12 of recovery

So... I had physical therapy today! I couldn't wait for my PT Brad to see how much improvement there was! He really was pleased. It was so awesome! We reviewed some of the things I can do, and had been doing at home, and he cheered me on. Then he burst my bubble. (LOL) Ok. Not really. But he knew how to test abilities I didn't know I didn't have back yet. *sigh* It was kinda deflating... but yet! I can do it!!!!!! On to the next climb....

My hands are doing really well considering where they were just 5 days ago! I could put 10 pegs in the peg board within 3-5 minutes. My strength isn't there, but the mobility (without Jedi Mind Powers) is HUGE! I can't believe how grateful I am to move without thinking it first! LOL He then had me take them out. That got just a little tricky for a bit, until I did it a few times and then my hands would respond well... and I got the hang of it.

Next he brought out a peg board with TINY pegs. I totally laughed out loud! He said that no, he didn't want me to put them in the board, he just wanted me to move them from one little cup to another. We were working on the pinching. It was the strangest thing!! I could pick them up, and the more I picked up, the more easily I could pick them up (they were just a size bigger than a toothpick, but metal and heavy-ish). The problem then became: I couldn't let them go! Bwahahaha!! I really struggled. I could not get my mind to respond to let them go! Jestin had to gently stroke the back of my thumb most times to get that part of my body to respond to my brain instructions. (It is interesting to find how well my body responds to tactile touch to the muscle I am tryin to use...amazing how the mind and body work together!) It was funny. He wants me to make myself a bowl of nails and practice moving them from bowl to bowl at home. :) I also have to practice putting golf tees into Jes' little game from Cracker Barrel (hopin' I didn't get rid of it!LOL). But other wise I can flip my hands back and forth without much thought. I can grip with a light grip. And my can use my wrist some.

I have to say though...Honestly... I have decided that you know Captain Jack Sparrow, from Pirates of the Carribean, he HAD to have had a stroke! I am not even kidding!! The response time of my body on that side, reminds of me of his movements! LOL They kind of sway sometimes and do their own thing, good seconds AFTER they should have. LOL It is really humorous. Brad and Jes laughed and laughed when I told them that! I will never watch Pirates the same way again! *GRIN*

He gave me some silly putty to exercise with, as well as some different uses to work my hands. And then we moved on to the lower half of my body.

Today I walked pretty good, with the front to back, heel to toe motion and I can do it without much thought process. But I felt like my foot was really wobbly and unstable, and it looked almost as if my leg was Jell-O as I walked. We did a bunch of exercises, and he is pleased with where I am at. The strength is not there, but the movement is most of the time. It can be slow, and I have what I have come to call "brain hiccoughs" where my body stops what I am trying to get it to do and freezes for a minute, but then engages again. So we are imrpoving there too...

But then he moved me to laying on the table to do hip lifts - where you lay on your back with your knees bent up and lift your hips into the air. I have been getting stronger in these, where before I would lift and my left side would drag my right side into the air, now I can almost get them to go up into the air at almost the same time. While I was laying there, Brad said he wanted to try something. He asked me to leave my heels on the table, but just lift my toes up. (I have been also doing great with toe taps when sitting and standing *grin* so I knew I could do it) As soon as I lifted my toes, my right leg fell over. He tried again, and it did the same thing. Appearantly I have no ability in my hip to sustain the balance of my leg when it is upright and my foot is not used to balance.

He had me roll onto my left side, and lay my right leg on top of left, ankle to ankle, knee to knee, hips aligned. He supported my hip from behind, and then asked me to lift my right knee up and away from my left. I could not do it. It was complete dead weight. There was NO response in those muscles to what my mind was telling it to do! It was so weird!! He scooped his hand under my knee, and while supporting my hip so they stayed in line, he lifted it up. He asked me to try and hold it up.  I could not. It did a few "catches" here and there on the way back down, but I had no control whatsoever. We did 15 of these. By the end, I could "catch" my leg in a few spots on the way down, and a couple of times my muscle locked and he had to gently rub the muscle in my hip to get it to disengage. It was so strange. By the time we were done with the 15 times, I was mentally exhauste!.

He had me roll over to the other side and try the same thing. It was a piece of cake. I did 15 in less than 20 seconds I am sure. It was night and day.

So... that explains why I walk with Jell-O like stability. My hip is not engaging to support me. :P So that is a new exercise I get to do as well. I came home feeling mentally beat, but I kept working at it all day long. I want to recover SO much! I want to just do what I want to do, when I want to do it.

The amount of healing that I am experiencing is awe inspiring. I have no doubt in my mind that the prayers and thoughts of others, combined with my physical therapy (and actually doing the exercises), and a positive mental attitude, mixed up with a healthy dose of the different types of massage and oil therapy that Jenny is doing is making it all come together. We are feeling like we are getting a Christmas miracle at our house this year! :) And our gratitude is over flowing....

First not-so-good day

I should have known it would come. I mean really... the last few days have been frought with miracles, tender mercies and great improvements that feel like bursts through my mind... why wouldn't I have a "down" day?

Jestin had his yesterday. He is feeling the weight on his shoulders. He has been SOO strong and brave and sweet. He was so sad all day. He tried to not be, but he was. Today he is better....but this is not easy. For any of us.

Today I am recovering from a nightmarish trip to Walmart last night. (see previous post) I came home swollen, aching, shaking, and mad. I practically fell into bed last night and slept HARD. Today everything is harder. I am tender. And I feel sad.

I think it is ok to feel sad about all of this.

I also feel strangely over stimulated mentally today. TV/radio was too much. Lights were too much. Noises were hard. Touching things was hard. I just wanted to close my eyes and sit in a silent box. It was WEIRD. It's like my brain needs a day off. LOL And tonight my speech is acting up, typing is harder and my entusiasm for trying to waning.

Jenny and Ma came down and she gave me another full massage, with essential oils as well, and that has helped some. We are now just going to go crawl into bed.

So... today is my first day with little improvements. Which sounds slightly whiny considering where I have come! But...be it what it may... tomorrow will be better. I have PT tomorrow and Brad is going to be THRILLED with how my weekend went! :)

Walmart :(

This is the letter I just sent off to Walmart...

I am a 34 yr old mother of 4. I suffered a sudden stroke the 1st of this month, and I lost almost all use of the right side of my body. Slowly, each day, I have regained some mobility. Last evening, after a particularly good day, my husband agreed to take me out to visit your Springville, UT location to get the remaining things on my children’s Christmas list. I was super excited as we arrived at your store, but when we inquired about a wheelchair that my husband to could use to push me around in since I am extremely unstable walking, we were informed that they only had the mechanical ones on this side of the store. Due to the stroke I cannot use a mechanical wheelchair because I only have use of one of my hands. My husband went to get a wheelchair from the appropriate area, and when he returned he told me that none of the wheelchairs had baskets because apparently teenagers ride on them and break them, so management removed all the baskets. Can you explan to me how I can shop without somewhere to put my items? My husband tried pulling a cart behind him while pushing me in the wheelchair in the front, a near impossible feat. After attempting this method for a couple of minutes we decided to see if I could push the cart while he pushed me, but I could not handle sitting and steering with one hand. It was a joke, and not at all a funny one. Shortly thereafter I just had my husband take the wheelchair back instead of fighting it, and it was obvious that there was no way I was going to be able to move through the aisles in a wheelchair anyway since there were pallets of goods everywhere I went. I instead tried to lean on the cart while walking through the rest of the store so that I could grab only the most necessary items. Obviously this was a poor choice on my part, as it has greatly impeded my recovery, but what choice did I have? I hope and pray for quick healing for me, that I may not need any of these services in the future, but I wanted to make you aware of the SEVERE lack of consideration for those with disabilities in your Springville store. I left your store in tears from exhaustion, swelling and pain, feeling like Walmart doesn't care about the needs of those who suffer from disabilities. Unfortunately I wasn't able to finish shopping for my children, which was the whole reason I chose Walmart above a closer supermarket. To be honest I am not sure I even want to go back to that store ever again. And I thought you should know.

I just picked up a pen!!!!!!!! And wrote a word!!!!!!!!! Without even thinking about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't freakin' believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BUT I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I picked up the big fat pen I had been fighting to try and use all day on and off...

WITHOUT thinking about it first!!!!!!!!!!! WOOT WOOT!!!!

Leaps and Bounds!

The prayers I feel have been so real I can almost touch them. I have been conquering physical tasks by leaps and bounds the last 2 days. And I have been trying to celebrate each one! Weakness is my biggest hang up, because I get affraid to fall/stumble/mumble/drop stuff/scare the kids. I am finding that I push harder when no one is watching. Interesting how the fear of failling gets you! *blush* pride. bah. Even though I know my family would not ever think that I failed, it's hard to want them to see that, or see the "let down" in their eyes. If that makes ANY sense. LOL I think it is a mental thing I am learning I have to let go of.

BUT I realize now how much power others can have..... if you let them. When surrounded by negative influence I did not do well. At Physical therapy I am surrounded by positive energy of my sweetheart, my PT's and the other patients there to cheer me on. The negative aura that I let penetrate my mind and soul and it stunted me. BIG TIME. It was enlightening in the grand scheme of things.

Do you know... the next day... when I shook it off and really focused on kind self talk, meditation and positive energy, that is when the new brain paths seemed to explode? That is when leaps and bounds were made. I had to "clear a path" for them and by so doing, get rid of pre-concieved notions about what others are thinking/judging/doing around me.

I can succeed without any input from others. I am me...and I have no need to excuse myself for it. KWIM? I dont have to explain it. I dont have to justify it. It is what it is. I am doing my very best... and God is COMPLETELY making up the rest. As I type this, I am continually using the backspace to delete the extra letters etc etc. but I am DOING IT with BOTH HANDS! My thumb is not helping, but my pointer finger is making up the difference. IT IS FINE!!! I can't believe the progress the last 2 days!!! :)

Also... I realized I was scared to go to church... for what people might think of me with a cane, dragging my foot on and off and not shaking hands well... and I had no desire to be "in the spotlight" yet again. But I went because *I* needed to take the sacrament. *I* needed to sing the Christmas hymns and feel the Spirit. I allowed myself to let that stuff NOT to penetrate me... and I was filled... to the brim!! And it was good.

If I have learned anything from this particular trial... it is that I need to change my focus from what others may think/judge about me, and let it go. It just doesn't really matter! As long as I am being the best I can, and what Father in Heaven needs me to be, the rest is not anything I can control. I can still reach out and love all those around me with a hand that wont grasp, or a foot that drags. I can still smile, laugh, joke, encourage, love and make a difference. And sometimes it can be be about me ...and that's ok.

And I have learned that negative energy in our lives is completely detrimental. The mind cannot progress with it. We just have to lay it aside adn not pick it up. We just have to ressist the temptation!

SO! Dear friends... find a way to lay that negative energy, thought process, garbage that others hand you aside. Your heart, soul, mind and body NEED to have the positive. It brain food. We are jamming up the communication lines inside ourselves if we dont just leave it alone.
Believe me! I KNOW! ;)

And there's my random two bits for the day. take them as you will :) LOL

Saturday, December 11, 2010

i was so excited i finally woke jes up off the couch just so he could see!! lol
we went to bed and i slept hard! i slept until after noon (we had no where i had to be sooo you know how that is... lol) this morning i got dressed by myself, i walked down the stairs, one at a time, instead of sliding on my butt!! my shoulder and elbow are working this morning without the ginormous amount of brain power as before! my hand is grasping, as long as the item i hold is light...but i havent been ablke to grip AND move my arm at the same time yet, so this is big!! i tried to blow my nose though... lol... my tissue holding grip is crap! bwhahahaha. my hip and knee are doing markedly better today too! My walking isnt as improved as my arm, but hey!!! i feel like a flood gate opened over night!!! A FLOOD GATE!! Path's are being blazed!!! :)

1 week down!! And i am kicking butt!!!!!!!!!!!

I am awake!

and I am wrapping my mind around a miracle tonight. It is almost to the exact time that 1 week ago I had a stroke. I have been trying for days and days to type one handed and document all of this goings on, since I obviously cannot write it down since I can't hold a pen. I had wicked physical therapy today. HARD HARD HARD. They gave me a cane to practice my walking. I spent forever trying to get my hand to respond to use the silly cork board again. And with all my exercises, by the time I left I was drenched in sweat and shaking, and my legs and arms were jell-o! And most of my exercises were mental, not really physical! I was beat. But as my family has slipped off to bed tonight, and Jestin is sleeping on the couch next to me, I laid my hand on the other side of the keyboard of the laptop next to my good hand. At first it took work to move the fingers at all. I typed and it was s.l.o.w. But as I kept pushing, because the keys are so light to touch, all 4 of my fingers are now typing letters!!!!!!! My thumb is not doing much yet... but it is like the pathway has been blazed!! I know it can come and go... but I am so excited!!! it is all I can do to not wake Jestin up right now and show him!! WOOT WOOT!!! This is my first post fully typed with all my fingers but my thumb. :) VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recovery Day 6

Getting a little better at one-handed typing W/ punctuation! LOL Today was a follow-up with my Dr. He really is just great! He is thorough, honest & kind. And I really appreciate it.

He is pleased with my progress. Really pleased about Jenny's success with getting my urinary tract going from the massage. He discussed with us what to watch for with possible bladder & kidney problems as it continues to heal. We are optimistic full function will return shortly without problems, but he has an antibiotic on standby just in case. (he wanted to start me on one just to be safe... but I couldn't mentally take one more thing...so we are just going to watch it & I am going to drink cranberry juice 'n lotsa water ;)  ) He wants me to start blood thinners, which we will monitor closely. Shots to myself the the stomach 2x day for 3 days, plus another pill from now on. It will be a big adjustment, as the med doesnt mix well with a lot of things (food, other drugs, he even laughed and said he thinks it is sensitve to the air we breathe! LOL) I feel nervous about it... I can't explain why. Trying to figure that out.

We also discussed the steriod I am on. Dr. C. wanted me to know that my "leaps and bounds" may be related to them... and to be prepared in case I plateu in recovery in days 5 from now when I go off of them. If I do, we may consider some kind of steriod on a long term basis to prevent any further blood vessel swelling. It is a wait and see scenario.

I did pretty good today. My shoulder has gotten most of its stength back and I can use less brain power to move it. My elbow is following suit. I can manupulate my hip pretty well, but the drag and slide of walking is getting really old! LOL Mostly cause I LOOK old! tee hee

Jenny came and gave me a massage today. She is amazing. I dont know what I would do without her. I feel like her "healing powers" have been huge! After my massage, I laid my head on my Ma's knee and while she stroked my cheek and neck I cried. This is a process that is for sure.

On to a different thought process though...

I am really amazed at the way my heart and soul has turned. I have deeply been pondering the article I posted last week about our version of reality (this world) and the real reality (eternity/Heavenly Father's pressence) and how I percieve things. I am keenly aware of how this physical body and my spiritual body are connected... and yet not. We ARE spiritual beings...having a mortal experience. And that changes everything.

I can conquer this. I will prevail. And if not.... I will still conquer. And I will still prevail.... even if it is only to be able to see my Father in Heaven again and my greastest comforter, ally, friend and my Savior on more levels than I ever understood before...Jesus Christ.

And I am deeply humbled to be given this trial.

Recovery Day 5/First Day of Therapy

I woke up this morning feeling thrilled! Some movement in the shoulders!! And my hip!! Jes helped me to shower, but he had to sneak out to quickly say prayers with the kids because their carpool was here. While he was gone I was tickled to be able to set my elbow up on the edge of the medicine cabinet ledge and lean down and put on my deodorant on one side! LOL Gotta celebrate all them there baby steps! *grin* And Jes was so cute to be so proud when he got back. :) He is so good to me! He has been noticing and celebrating every tiny milestone. He tells me I can. He tells me never to quit. He tells me he believes in me. And I believe him.

He got us breakfast made and eaten, and we headed out to my first physical therapy appointment. I was nervous. First I havent done much walking outside the house, and second, I didnt know what to expect. But I was ready to kick butt and take names! I want my body back! And aint no way a stroke is ruining my life!

First i met with the speech therapist. He tested some of my speech abilities. i struggled with "t" and "k". I have some troubles with longer words, especially ones with "r"s and "b"s in them. "Baseball player" was a mouthful. "caterpillar" is one they gave me at the hospital and it is still slow and slurry. : P He gave me a bunch of exercises and asked me to make sure I read out loud for 30 minutes a day...enunciating every word. His name is Kirtt...but it sounds like I say Kirk...I WILL say his name right next time I see him! ;)

Brad, my physical therapist, came in next. We reviewed my abilities. He was another knight in shining armor! I loved how blunt and open he was with us... with me. he explained that a stroke means that the original pathways in my brain are now gone. They will never come back. The truth is the brain can re-create *new* pathways, and in the mean time i have to accept they are gone. I can make new pathways. I can make my brain relearn what it knew a new way, but i have to know/accept that for the rest of my life there may be days when i have done too much, gone through something extremely emotional or fatiguing, and i will see recurring symptoms simply because my brain is too tired/lazy to re-use the new pathways I make now. i am so thankful for the reality check so i can burst forward and not go it not knowing. know what i mean?

my best chances for recovery are in the next 6-8 weeks, so i have to work hard, but really it could take 4-6 months for most signs to go away.

Brad then started having me try his excersises. ah. ha.

#1 - take both feet and put them flat on the floor shoulder width apart while sitting in a chair. Tap them up and down together at the same time. it was not easy. not at all. i had to think really hard.

THEN... he had me try to lift them alternately at the same time. i could believe the amount of effort that took!! i could only do it twice...very...very slowly.

#2 - he had me stand up and hold on to his shoulders as he sat in a chair. i shifted my weight from one side to the other. next he had me pick up my feet, one at a time, kind of marching. he wanted knees up. i wasnt so great at this one either.

#3 - we went walking. it was only 6-7 steps, but he wanted heel-to-toe steps without dragging, and the weakness was so very very appearant! that became task #3. walking properly. i have to have jestin hold on to me from behind, and take 10-15 perfect steps 2-3x daily. He said form is most important. "practice doesnt make perfect...perfect practice makes perfect". ;)

#4 - next i was to take my hands and put one facing up, one hand facing down. The task was to alternate them at the same time. ha. yeah. no.

turns out that those items that require me to focus on more than one body part moving at the same time, or opposite my lame side, are nigh-on impossible right now. Them there pathways do not work! LOL

#5 - touch each of my fingers together, one at a time. Once we got to my hands, I really struggled. Really. That is where the most damage is I think. Each new thing I realized a couldn't do anymore, brought this fierce desire to prove my body wrong... and some tears as well.

With each task, i would concentrate until i would cry. i could never have imagined such a thing! It was SOOO hard. Not painful...just mental hard.

#6 - my new nemesis... the cork board. They have a cork board... and it has big fat toddler size pegs that you put in a foam board. My hand would not compute picking up the pegs and keepin them pinched in my fingers at the same time as trying to lift my arm to move them. It was as though I was trying to use my Jedi mind powers that I don't have! I can't begin to describe the mental strain that it was. It took me almost 45 minutes to put in 10 pegs!!! :( It was SO annoying! caleb came with us and he got a kick out of the cork board. When he realized I got to "play" with them... he came right over and said "let make a pattern mom!" LOL He kept trying to help me. it was really sweet.

after the exercises Brad walked us out... or rather made ME do my good steps walking out. I did another 8-10 steps "the right way" before i was completely done. I was shaking. I was sweaty. I was emotionlly and mentally exhausted!!

He wants to see me again on friday. And as we checked out at the front office, the secretary informed us that our little state run primary care insurance program does not cover any physical therapy. BUT. Brad wants to just help me. He says he will continue to work with me, and he will make sure we have the tools/tasks we need, regardless. we both burst into tears... what a miracle. What a miracle. we dont deserve it... but we are humbled, honored and grateful for good people in the world. We pray we can someday repay him. He is a good man. And if any of you need a REALLY good Occup./Physical Therapist... I know JUST the guy! He deserves to succeed and succeed well!

Upon arriving home, my trash was kicked. it was unbelievable how tired i was. i had friends call to check on me, and because of the mental exhaustion, i had to close my eyes to talk on the phone. i couldnt process a phone conversation and visual images at the same time. Weird. it was so weird!

Jestin made us dinner and we gathered in the family room to have me read aloud. I chose this article , thinking it was a good Christmas article. I cried through most of it, either because the words were hard for me to say, or the message was just for me/us. Either way... the words pierced my heart. It was a great ending to a really hard day.

I no longer believe in "I can't".
I no longer want to say that "I can't".

I will succeed. I will gain all my use back. And we as a family will overcome this... and be closer for it... I hope.

ER Trip & Hospital stay

And so... on with the story...

We got in the car and jes asked me which hospital i wanted to go to. My cardiologist is at UVRMC, 10-15 minutes away, or we could go to the quieter hospital closer to our home. i was not sure why, but i felt like we should go to the one closest to our home. in hind sight i am glad we did.

We arrived and they got us right back. The ER doc started asking questions. He wanted to know when the head ache was. I had a small window in which they could administer medications for stroke. i couldn't tell him, because i hadnt looked at the clock at all until it was 4:30 or so, but it dawned on me that one of my FlySistahs passed me in the hall when i said something about my head, and maybe she was aware of the time. i asked jes to call Allie, thinking it may have been her. That started a calling tree, and jes was in touch with Patty soon after I guess, where she remembered the time being around 1-2 am. She also told jes that she remembered me talking about seeing double of Erica, and tapping my leg for a couple of hours.

When jes came back into the room and said something about Patty remembering the loss of vision, i was shocked and started to cry. I had *completely* forgotten about that! How could i have missed it? i *knew* the signs of stroke. i had studied them. i just really thought they came all at once... not 30+ minutes apart! I thought there would be some marching brass band that would announce it and either I, or those around me, would easily be able to detect it! LOL And i, for some reason didnt think that the symptoms would fade away like that... at least not the vision and the headache part. *sigh* see how much i know? LOL

They immediately started tests on me. Blood work, a cat scan and a thourogh exam. A small giggle we enjoyed at my expense: when i discovered i couldnt write while at home, i walked up to Jestin and said..."i just tried to write and it was obnoxious!" And the word came out "anah-k--tious". He and emma had laughed, but as the Dr. started checking speech and tongue, Jestin piped up "get her to say obnoxious!". We all laughed lightly and that has been our tension breaker phrase ever since. LOL

They didn't find a lot from the cat-scan, so the next order of business was an MRI. They did an MRI of my head, neck and brain, and an MRA as well. for a few hours we were mentally preparing for a possible transport to UVRMC for surgery to remove a clot. They also feared bleeding on the brain, and that would require a trip there and a possible surgery as well. Or a tumor in my neck. The other possibilty is a mini stroke, and they would keep me overnight for that to observe me. either way... i wasnt going home anytime soon. :( but the ER doc was fantastic in that he shared any and all info/possibilities/procedures with us. I know sometimes not knowing is better.. but that day it wasn't. And i am so thankful he was as honest and frank as he was.

Jestin was amazing!!! he ran communications for friends and family, as I didn't want to talk because of my speech. He asked all the questions i couldnt think of. he coordinated the care of our kids, held me when i cried. Cried with  me. Laughed with me. And faced this with immense courage. Here he is, still healing from another eye surgery, trying to keep his stress levels down to prevent swelling that could cause him to loose his sight, all the while meeting all the needs of his little family and his wife who floated between straight faith and utter fear. He is just amazing!!

The tests came back clear of large clots or bleeding. i was sent upstairs for observation. This is where I met my new Dr. HE IS AWESOME. He did a really thourogh exam and medical history. He asked all kinds of questions. He decided that he wanted to start me on some steriods, as some of my blood vessels were swollen it seemed, and with my recent symptoms, that I never put together as anything, he is leaning towards an auto-immune disorder. We discussed pros and cons, and not being sure what we are dealing with, he started to leave the room. He then turned and said..."you know. I have had some success with mini-stroke patients who turn the corner really fast if I put them on oxygen. would you be ok with that?" Of course we said yes. He left and the nurse hooked me up. Within 5-10 minutes, the numbness cleared up dramatically. We called him back in and showed him. Even some of the weakness was improved! YEA! He decided he wanted to do an ultra sound of my heart in the morning, as well as of the ateries in my neck. It was about 5 pm, but he said he would keep me overnight for observation. :) and we would discuss more in the morning.

I also asked for some tylenol at this point...  because after the noisy MRI/MRA and the crying etc, I had a splitting headache. They said they had to test my ability to swallow first. The nurse brought me a cup of water and spoon. I had to try and swallow just a spoonful of water. It was like I had something stuck in my throat. I could not swallow it.  :( I was so sad. We would try again in a couple of hours. dang it.

our good friends, the Meads, had kept the boys all day and he brought them down to see us at the hospital that night. Emmalee had been really, really, struggling with the whole thing. She had been crying on and off all day. My good friend Suzie had stopped by and picked her up from home to take her shopping so she wouldn't be home thinking about it. She brought her by as well. It was nice to be able to hold the kids and tell them I was going to be alright.

Emma refused to leave. She insisted she stay the night with me that night, even though I urged them to all go home and rest. Jess ran her home to get her pillow, blanket and a book, and she hunkered down on two hard chairs pushed together for the night. It was so sweet! About 11:30 pm, I asked to try to swallow again. It worked a bit better! I was able to swallow with just a few "catches" in my throat! HALLELUYAH! Tylenol and a sleeping pill later (because the streriod was throbbing my head and making me jittery) and I fell fast asleep.

The next morning, they drew my blood at the crack of dawn! : /  Then off for the ultra sound of my neck. I could barely keep my eyes open as he wheeled me down the hall. It took a little while to come awake from my first real experience with sleeping pills! And back to my room, it was an ultra sound of my heart.

Ma & Jenny showed up at the end of the ultrasound, and they spent the afternoon with me and Emma. Jenny gave me a massage and coated me with essential oils. She also took Em to go get some lunch. My dad showed up for a couple of hours. He is in a branch presidency at the MTC, but they were having a mission conference and he snuck out to see me before he had to be back for interviews. It was really funny... the nurse stuck her head in and got all flustered and said she would be back while my dad was standing there. A while later she came in, saying she had to give me my meds, and kept looking at Dad. Finally she asked..."are you the Dad?" My dad said yes, and she laughed and said she was relieved! She had seen him in his dark suit and name tag, alone, and fingured he was a general authority!! BWAHAHAHA

My Dr. came in shortly after Dad left and said that my ultra sounds looked ok. He then proceeded to give me a very detailed run down of the results of every test. He shared the facts, he shared his opinion, and then he turned to me and said... "I feel like I am the educator... so I give you all the facts and my knowledge and experience, but I want to know what YOU think." I was so surprised. I told him I thought I had a stroke. He smiled and said, "me too, but it's your body and we, as owners of our bodies, tend to "know" things for ourselves." it was just plain awesome. I really appreciated his candor and honesty.

He told me that I have 1 cholestorol # that is high... and so he wants to put me on a med for it, because in my risk factor range I cannot get it down that low on my own with diet and exercise alone. He said he wanted to switch my hive meds, and he wanted to keep me on the steriods. He also wanted to start IV fluids. A level in my kidneys almost doubled. He was keeping me another night to follow up with it in the morning.

Jestin came with Cody and Cam (caleb chose to go to church with his best buddy Jesse), mom & jenny left, and we were left alone as a family in the hospital room. It was perfect. The kids were rattled by this whole thing... and so just being quiet, cuddling, and watching our favorite show (Mythbusters) on the TV and hanging out was just what their emotions needed. They helped me take a short walk around the nurses station before my IV got hooked up. It was super slow and hard, and I was spent when I was done, but it felt good to move some... even if I looked like Kwazimoto!

Jes took the kids home to have dinner and I hunkered down for the evening. My friend Suzie came to visit me again. Emma made me brownies, and they came back to see me before bed.

Blessedly, since it was Sunday night, and she had school in the morning, I sent Emma home to sleep. She protested, but I was glad she went, as I ended up with a room mate later that night who had nurses coming in and out for her that would have kept Emmy up.

About 10 pm, my FLYSistah Denice was so very kind to come by and bring me some divine chocolate cake and a listening ear. I cried. I was mad. I was brave. I was sorrowful. I vented like Mount Rushmore. She let me say anything and everything I felt and we cried and cried together... and BOY did it feel good to not have to be brave for her. It was like I got all the ugly out to be ready for the good. She was wonderful and stayed with me until almost 1 am, when my sleeping pill (again) started kicking in. I will forever be thankful for her sacrifice for me.

The next day (monday), I woke up to more blood being drawn. My Dr. came in and said my kidneys made a marked improvement, so they would let me go home, after I met with the speech therapist, the occupational therapist, and the physical therapist. We arranged for Jes to have a ride to his follow up from eye surgery appointment with "Grandma & Grandpa" next door, and Ma came to bring me home when it was all said and done at the hospital.

The speech therapist was great. He said he thinks I can get all my slur to go away. He also checked my swallowing again and gave me tricks to keep from choking. I still had some clicks to swallow through. Then came the occupational therapist, who focused on my arm. And then the physical therapist who focused on my leg. The PT actually took me for a walk 5-6 doors down, kind of fast (for me) and was asking me questions I had to explain. It was torture!!!!!!!! by the time I got back to my bed, I was in shock. It was just too much to walk and talk at the same time! :o Unbelieveable. it is amazing to me how the brain works. It is amazing to me to think of what has happened. It is amazing to me... all of it.

And yet, I feel this uncanny sense of gratitude for this trial. i am not sure I like it... and I KNOW it is goin to be a tough road. But this too shall pass. It came to pass...not to stay... and it could be so much worse! i am blessed. I truly am.

BTW - Jestin's eye looks pretty good. he has some wrinkling in his retina, which isn't great, but it isn't swelling and pulling away, so that is optimistic. He has to go back for another check in two weeks, just in case.

Oh and BTW again... I came home on Monday... our 13th Temple wedding anniversary. Happy Anniversary my little eternal family!! :)

what a weekend!

i dont even know where to start.
i keep thinking it isnt real.
i had a stroke over the weekend.
i will share the story another post, but today i want to chronicle a few of observations about this type of event.

  • miracles still occur in this world
  • tender mercies from God are abundant
  • my family means everything to me
  • i love so many people... and cant believe how many people love me
  • my brain is an amazing organ that i really do need
  • there are still great doctors out there who care about the patients persceptions and care about your overall health.
  • swallowing is important
  • so is going to the bathroom LOL
  • my husband is the most amazing person i know
  • friends are the family you get to choose
  • my baby sisters talent for massage therapy and her knowledge from her nursing skills can make miracles happen.
  • time can be on my side...if my heart is in it and i stay positive.
oh! and typing one handed makes for lots of delete botton, backspacing and is time consuming! LOL

The story of my stroke...

who knew you could have too much fun? please forgive the spelling/punctuation errors. typing one handed on a wobbly laptop doesnt make it super easy! lol

ok.. here's the story for posterity...

I went to my yearly Christmas party with my "crazy internet friends" - the FLYSistahs - friday night (Dec 3rd). It was here only about 10 minutes from my house at Denice's. i had one of the best nights of my life! We laughed...we cried... we ate delicious food... I was with some of my dearest friends. We started late, so by the time we were done with our present exchange and white elephant game, we then sat around enjoying catching up and encouraging each other. When finally started dispersing...and i looked at the clock. It was about 4:30 am. *blush*

From what we can figure time wise, just before we started just chit chatting, it was about 12:30-1 am. I wandered into the kitchen to get a drink of water. On my way back to the livingroom, i had a sharp pain on the left side of my head. I told my Flysistah Patty that there was no more chocolate for this girl! that i thought i was having a sugar headache from the "gut-bombs" and orange sticks! lol! (gut bombs are pre-made frozen cream puffs, rolled in melted Symphony bars and then powder sugar...yum-o!) We laughed and i went and sat down to enjoy the visiting. The headache dispersed about 10 minutes later, and i only had a slight tension/pressure headache after that. So forgot all about it... i mean after all i knew it was late, eating junk and i had been laughing my butt off! LOL of course i could have a headache!

About 30 minues later, i was listening to Flysistah Erica talk, and started having blurry double vision. I laughed and said...hey erica! i must be tired! i see two of you! We all laughed, and i blinked and closed my eyes on and off, and it went away about 5-10 minutes later.

About 30 minutes later, i started feeling my right leg go numb. now really... that is not too new. i experience some numbness from my heart in my extremities all the time. not to mention, i had been having some episodes of my back going out, and thought that that could be the cause as well - you know - a pinched nerve or something. I was enjoying the chit chats, so i just ket tapping my leg, in an effort to keep it awake until i stood up and "walked it off".

About 2 hours later, we all started breaking up the party, cleaning up and heading home. i kinda hung around a bit. i could not get my leg to wake up! walking with a limp was not waking it up. i had the thought that i should just stay the night at my friend Denice's home, but knew i was only 10 minutes from home! so i said goodbye and headed out.

the only indication i had that anything was wrong with my arm, was that i tried to hold the car keys and put them in the ignition. it was kinda hard to turn them to start the car. i figured i must be just really tired... it was after all almost 5:30 in the morning! so, i just reached over and used my left arm. As i drove, i realized i could push the pedal for the gas, but my foot was so numb and weak, it was difficult. and then pushing the brake was near impossible. i used my left foot instead. i felt really annoyed that "this pinched nerve" was being such a pain the butt! i made it home just fine. i hind sight i cant believe i was so blessed to not have bad weather, or people around me etc etc.

i came into the house, and was feeling exhausted. i am embarrased to say, i did nt do some of the things that would have given me a clue that my arm was really effected as well. i figured it was close enough to morning that if i didnt take meds it would be ok because i could take am doses after i slept for a bit. i also *blush* did not brush my teeth. i just went straight upstairs to go to bed. Jes was waiting for me... he had been dosing, but had not gone to bed. the only slight clue i had that my arm was effected, aside from driving, was pulling off my shirt; it had a funky twinge along the back of it... as if i had overworked the muscle or something. i just crawled into bed with jes.

we talked about the party for a bit, and as we quieted down, i realized my leg was more than i could handle. i whispered to jes in the dark that i thought i could use a priesthood blessing, that the discomfort from my numb leg was feeling tough to take. He asked to tell him about it... so did. all about the sudden numbness while sitting, and tapping  it, and it not waking up when i walked around... but as i got to the part about driving home... he was gently snoring. i just smiled, snuggled into him, decided just being near him was enough. it was 6 am after all!! i would just call my sister jenny in the morning and see if she could come massage out the "pinched nerve".

Through the night i remember being semi-awakened when i would try to roll over, mostly because my body was super heavy. i remember thinking i really over-did staying out late and would need a day to recoperate the next day. lol.

Jes woke me up about 10:30, wanting to say morning prayer with me, as he needed to get to a job here in the neighborhood. when i rolled over i realized how heavy my body seemed. i told jes i would just stay in bed for prayers and fold my arms. we prayed and then he headed downstairs. i started to feel a bit uneasy, and honestly thought to myself "dont let him leave!". i got out of bed and went to the bathroom. i realized that my arm was now numb, as well as my leg still. i decided to call jenny.

I asked her about the possibility of a pinched nerve effecting both the leg and the arm. She said it was highly unlikely. Then she switched from massage therapist, to nurse. She asked me about any head ache. i said no... i didnt really have a headache, more of a slight tension headache...more like i had stayed up too late and ate junk. lol. She asked if i had one last night. i said, "no... not really...oh...but wait! i did! but it didnt last very long!" She talked to me more about how numb i was, and then reccomended i go to the Dr. asap. We hung up and i went downstairs to catch jes. walking was like it is when your leg is asleep. lol

i told jes i had called jen, and that she thought i should go to the Dr. i asked him to help find someone to give me a priesthod blessing first. i wanted some counsel before i "ran off to the ER with a pinched nerve". (i laugh about that now... : P) He immediately started calling people and i thought while i waited i would write down how many cookbooks i sold to my flyfriends at the party.

i could not grasp the pen!!! i forced it into my hand, and to grip, but when i let the pen toch the paper, it would just fall. At this point i was officially scared. i went in and sat by the tree and tried not to cry.

Bro. Mead came down and helped jes give me a blessing. It was clear and beautful. I knew i had to go to the hospital. I knew i would have a longer recovery time, but that blessings promised me before would be fullfilled. that i would live for more to do. That the work i have on this earth is not through.

And so we went.

(i will post ER visit on another post folowing... i am exhausted by this and need to rest. more to follow...)

LOVED this article...

And thought I would share. It is deep and profound. Enjoy!

I love how Maurine Proctor describes the process of becoming aware. If you have a few minutes to feed your soul, I suggest you read this article below. This is taken from an article entitled, Coming up Empty and Casting your Net on the other side (Meridian Magazine Nov 9, 2010)

******************

After Christ’s resurrection, Peter said “I go a fishing.” Toiling, that night they, too, caught nothing, and when they returned, Jesus stood on the shore with this kind question, “Children, have ye any meat?” How kind to be called with the loving term, “Children.” When they answered no, he simply told them to cast their nets on the other and “ye shall find” (John 21:6).

Coming up empty after giving great effort and passionate engagement is not uncommon in our experience as mortals in a fallen world.

Coming up empty has its purpose for it arrests our attention as little else can. It is a message that says “look.” We are stopped cold. Some of us just try harder with the net on the same side of the boat and end up bitterly disappointed that there are still so few fish. We insist that we must do things as we have always done, be who we have always been.

Yet, in reality, this dangling empty net is really the kindest invitation to look up from our trouble to the One on the shore who has been waiting there to greet us all along. We are being invited not just to come to Him, but to come to ourselves. We are being invited to a new awareness.

The world we live in is not the real thing. It never has been. We have adjusted because we had to. In fact we have put great energies around constructing what we think is reality and finding our place here. Our deepest, eternal self is layered with assumptions that are not true, perceptions that are skewed, expectations that are wrong. We have told our own story to ourselves in ways that are distorted. Though we try to do better, we are indeed looking through a glass darkly.

We do the best we can on earth, but we get it wrong. Try as we may, we cannot always act in our own best interest, let alone the best interest of anyone else. We are asleep to the actual world, which is closer to us than we know and full of light and truth.

Behind these empty nets is a smiling reality, a divine world lit by light that flows from the bosom of God himself that we often cannot feel.

The scriptures advise us to awake as if we are in the drowsiest, most unaware slumber, raising our heads from the pillow in a twilight, only to sink back down again to sleep. “Awake, awake, put on thy strength,” we are told. “Awake and arise.”

This is repeated with some urgency in scripture for if we are to journey to that expanded world of light, the actual world, we must begin by understanding that our way of thinking must be transformed. The deep sleep must be penetrated. Grace for grace we must grow in our mind and awareness, letting the false things fall away, shedding the shadow props that we have created to make sense of the world and our place in it.

It is utterly true that to be with the Lord and like him, we cannot do things the way we have always done them. We cannot be who we have always been. We cannot be glued to see as we have always seen.

Thus, in his kindness, God gives us experiences that reveal to us our limitations, the short-sightedness of our personally-constructed worldview. It is as if life is a perfect play, scene by scene, to reveal our flaws, to move us right up against our glass ceiling, to trip us up when we would fly.

Why did I have this experience we might ask with lament. The answer is simple, to reveal yourself to you.

What kindness this is for otherwise we should become content and think we got it right, like the blind child who really believes the whole world is dark. Or like the Masai who, when put in prison, die, because they believe that is all there is and cannot envision freedom. We would be robbed of our thirst for God and feel no need to cast our nets on the other side. We would miss the catch that was so great we could not draw it in. We would not yearn to respond to his instructions.

In our minds and hearts we embrace charity and courage and devotion, and think that because we love them, we exhibit them, that we have become them.

Then how disappointing it is in the rough and tumble of real life to find we are protective of our ego and self-image just at the moment we should have been charitable.

How difficult to see that we seek to control and dominate things through the exercise of our own pride and will because we are frightened that things won’t work out for us. How devastating it is to see that too often we take the short cut of trying to look good instead of actually being good.

As he did in the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord gives us commandments whose level of difficulty make them impossible. Love your enemies? Bless them that curse you? Turn the other cheek? If someone sues you and takes your coat, give them your cloak also? Truly, how can he ask this? Those who try to develop these attributes without the strengthening and enabling power of the atonement and the Spirit of God will be bitterly disappointed.

Instead, he is asking us to move to a new world where we cast our nets on the other side and he, the generous and abundant giver, fills them, fills them to overflowing.

These are not do-it-yourself projects. Your soul is not a do-it-yourself project. There must come a day on this journey called mortality that we arrive at the place where we finally confess, “I cannot do this alone.” By taking thought on my own, I cannot add one cubit to my height.

In reality, in the spiritual journey we come to this realization again and again. We are his project and he will not come up empty, if we will just be willing to look to him and cast our nets on the other side.

Only he can take us from where we are to where he is with our mind becoming open to this new world of light. We must give up our resistance toward him, even that small piece of resistance that we think is nearly invisible. We must follow Jesus’ example in the Garden of Gethsemane, and under our own small stress, learn to pray “more intently.” We must be willing to have our very core transformed, the identity we have built piece by piece remodeled, even painfully so. We must cry unto him for all our support, because after all we can do, we will find it wasn’t very much.
